If you just want to do this from a single workstation to simplify
installing local apps, you probably won't run into too many problems. 
If you allow all of the workstations to do this, you will break things. 
Linux generally assumes that /usr may be shared, but / is all mine.  In
LTSP this isn't the case.  

You don't need this for installing regular (non-local) apps; just
install them on the server.

I'm curious what brought this up; have you run into an error regarding
this?
