That only means that you don't have a (supported) PCI graphics card.
ISA cards cannot be automatically recognised, but many of them are of
course supported by X version 4+.

AFAIK VGA is limited to 16 colors, 256 colors is SVGA. What does MS
Windows tell you about the chip?
