    First:  Good for you.  A hospital is a great place to introduce standards like 
these, and I wish you well.

    Then:  This can be done; there's a section in Gnome's help system that'll let you 
assign a key for it; I think it's under "keyboard shortcuts" or "keyboard macros" or 
somesuch.

    Not to be contrary, but are you trying not to *buy* mice, or just not use'em?  Ya 
know, if it's basic terminal emulation (if you're not gonna use email/etc in the GUI) 
you can just have the workstations come up in level 3, instead of 5...then you can ^D 
to exit in a flash.  And it's easier on the network, too...
