Hi Brian,

I agree with you. The installation instructions for OOo is not in its 'obvious'
places. Anyway, you can find them
at their website at http://OpenOffice.org if you look hard enough.

But if you are in a rush, i cut up a portion of an INSTALL file which i made earlier.
I don't know what OOo
version you have but the one i made was for 641D. For OOo 1.0 the /normal directory
was renamed to /install.

Hope this helps,

Phil

+++ Installing on a Linux Machine

1. Select a directory where you want to install OpenOffice. A good place is
/opt/openoffice

2. Copy the tarred-gzipped file: /Linux/install641d_linux_intel.tar.gz from this CD
into
   your openoffice directory

3. Extract the files by typing (you need to login here as root):

   tar -xzvf install641d_linux_intel.tar.gz

4. In your install directory in (1) , proceed to ../normal
(this is where the unpacked files now reside).

   A. Network Installation: Use this option if you want to share the OpenOffice
binaries
across all your users in your machine (highly recommended). Login as root then
type:

      ./setup -net

      Follow all prompts.

The network installation program now resides in the ../OpenOffice.org641
directory.

After the network installation, you will then need to install OpenOffice for your
individual users. To do this, a user must log in and then proceed to the
folder where the network installation program now resides (../OpenOffice.org641).
You will then have to repeat this step to install OpenOffice for all your users.

To install for a particular user, type:

      ./setup

Installation program then creates the necessary files and folders in the user's
      home directory.

   B. Stand Alone: Installs binaries in user's home directories (takes a lot of space,
not a good idea)
      Login as user then type:

      ./setup

The installation program now resides in the ../OpenOffice.org641 folder of the
      user's home directory.

5. Running OpenOffice

-Proceed to your user's home directory:

-Look for the file ../OpenOffice.org641/soffice and click on it to launch
OpenOffice.
