    Well, for realtime, visual (simpler) stuff, I like trafshow. Under X you can 
stretch it vertically to be able to see more traffic.

    But if it's serious, head-down, figure-out-the-protocol stuff, ethereal does a 
great job.  It also runs in X, and much like the hex editors of old, it tears apart 
the data and lets you see it both in the actual bytes in the packets, as well as what 
they mean.  It's very good, and reveals just how much one doesn't really know about 
the details of TCP/IP/UDP/etc traffic that's really there.  :)

   And if you just want something cool to quantify the traffic and the hosts involved, 
there's a project called etherape.  It shows the hosts that are communicating with 
graphical (3d) cones relating to the amount of traffic.

    All of these tools are available through Freshmeat of course, and I'm pretty sure 
they're available through APT for Redhat. (That's one SWEET package. No wonder the 
Debian people like it so much!)
