When the machine is initializing, after the POST most machines since
Pentium I display the PCI devices detected (will say something like
"network device") with their respective IRQs.  If desired you can pause
the display by pressing a key (can't remember whether it's "pause" or
"Scroll Lock").  Look to see if there is another PCI device sharing the
same IRQ with the NIC.  Depending on the type of BIOS your machine has,
some allow setting IRQ's to specific PCI slots.  Also, set the BIOS to
"non PnP OS" or its equivalent on your machine.

If you boot from a DOS floppy ("Make boot disk" in W9x) then you can run
rset8139.exe which is a DOS utility which displays and allows limited
changes to the NICs configuration.  You will have to use it to boot from
boot rom if & when you get to that point anyway.  The utility is available
from realtek (IIRC, www.realtek.com.tw) and a few other sites on the 'net.
