The thin clients I have are the IBM Netvista N2200 model number 8363-CX1

The linux Kit that IBM provides for these thin client can be found here:

http://service.boulder.ibm.com/nc/linux/linux.shtml
http://www3.software.ibm.com/dl/nc/priv/netsta-l_linux (requires login)

The toolkit provides IBM's customized kernel and the installation script to install a Redhat or Turbolinux system from the CDs to an NFS exported partition.

The script installs the system from distribution CD's, makes a couple of changes to init scripts and adds lines to your server's /etc/exports file.

The thinclient remotely boots on the provided kernel (kernel.2x00) and mounts the NFS installation of Linux.

I works fine, BUT, the installation requires 1.3 Gb and it's painful to maintain, furthermore LTSP works better and I would rather use the Redhat 8 version installed on the server...

Cheers

TOM

actually, the problem that I found with the netvista thin clients, is that
there are different ones for different server environments. There was some
discussion on this list about the IBM netvista thin client that was being
offered for $100, but it was not the thin client for linux. i don't know if
anyone successfully got it hacked to work with linux. i would assume that
the IBM machines are top notch once you get passed this problem.

can you send some more info on the clients you currently have?

Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] IBM Netvista N2200/N2800 Thin clients

Hello,

I was wondering if any wizz kid, had managed to tweak IBM thinclients to
run with LTSP.

IBM provides a solution to run Linux Redhat or Turbolinux on their small
client. It works, but it's nowhere near LTSP in terms of implementation,
performance and use ! and since I allready have LTSP running, why change ?

The problem with IBM netvista thinclients is that they dont recognise
the compressed kernels, nor the mknbi etherboot kernels used with LTSP.

I tryed to use the kernel they provide for booting on LTSP's NFS
installation instead of the "IBM custom Linux NFS installation".

No luck with that, the kernel boots but hangs in the middle of booting
just after mounting LTSP's NFS export.

So I'm calling for anyone out there who might have figured it out, I
would really like to get those 10 thinclients going on LTSP, I'm trying
to convince my company to give Linux a chance, and to do that they gave
me these 10 thin clients that they used for computer training courses
and public access web terminals.

Thanks a million

Cheers

TOM
