The only reason I use 800x600 is that my 15" monitors cannot handle anything greater. Then again my entire network of 6 machines cost me an entire CDN$1800 as all parts are castoffs for free or second hand.
My personal preference is 1024x768 as a minimum on a 17" monitor.
