Well guys I found a solution to booting a mini-itx from compact flash
and pointing it to a linux server running xdm. I downloaded a 32M
compact flash image from this site. I then replaced the startup scripts
with my own and overwrote the password and shadow files with my own.

I am not ready to release the hacked image yet as I still have some
cleanup to do but if you wish to play this is a great way to start.
You will need a 17 Dollar compact flash to ide adaptor and a 32 M
compact flash card 20 - 30$ and a usb reader writer to burn images. I
personally use a pny flash card reader. Burn the image to the compact
flash and then mount it to make your changes. Once you get a image that
you want you can duplicate it with dd. To produce numerous cards you
just cat the image to a card and you are ready to go.

You should be able to get the box together for 250 to 275 dollars and
best of all, no moving parts ...

I had to develope a similar capability here. The main difference is that I hacked up a litte pxe bootable configuration program that will initialize the flash.
So All I have to do is config the bios to boot from IDE and then PXE and then let the device boot from the network, download the programing software and then setup the flash.

The programming software is based on toms root boot.

I set up the flash disk with grub to boot the final image and currently down load 3 images; a wireless boot, a regular network boot and a copy of toms for rescue work.

It is not likely to see a lot of clean up work but I can make it available and answer some questions for anybody who is intersted.
