George,

I'll guess that you are running GDM.  GDM has a problem where
it doesn't kill off processes if the user shuts off the terminal.

KDM and XDM don't seem to have that problem.

Also, GDM has a configuration entry to limit the number of
sessions.  Try cranking that number up.  Look for the gdm.conf
file for that.  It is well commented.


In the short term, you just need to restart gdm on your server.
