The server is running the K12LTSP distro, which uses RH8 and LTSP 3.0. It will boot up, and I can log onto the server and run apps fine. The problem is how it appears. The NetStation only has 2 megs of video ram and as a result the desktop does not look right. It has to alias fonts and colors due to the difference in video ram between the server and the WS (I think that is the problem). The log on the client clearly shows that it is aliasing the fonts, and I assume the same is true of the colors. The WS is set to use the same resolution as the server i.e. 1024x768. I tried to set the ram to 2 megs on the server and the color depth in the xf86config file to work in only 2 megs but that did not make any improvement. I have tried other things as well, changes to NFS so that the X11 fonts are exported, changed the theme and any other changes I could think of. It appears regardless of the window manager I use, KDE or Gnome. Those are the only ones that work. I have tried others, such as IceWM, but they do not even boot up to a logon screen. Any ideas on how to correct this would be a great help. Someone has given me a 'heads-up' on a marketing push being done by a certain large proprietary software company who is about to launch a propaganda blitz based on the premise that There isn't any good support for Open Source software. What we want to do is kill that blitz before it even gets started. So, what I need is some comments from some of you out there who are using Open source software, like LTSP, who are happy with the support that they've been able to receive using various methods, such as this mailing list, and the #ltsp IRC channel. Now I know that we don't handle every single problem that pops up, but I think that through the many helpful people on this list, most questions get answered fairly quickly. In many cases, the answers appear in a matter of minutes. Comments comparing the excellent support you've received via open source channels versus the type of support you receive when calling a "commercial" support line are of particular interest. If you could email your comments, along with contact info to John Terpstra at [EMAIL PROTECTED], that would be great. John will then forward those comments to a journalist who is preparing an article to be published BEFORE the propaganda blitz has a chance to get published. So, time is critical here. We need lots of people to respond to this, and send John some interesting comments. Sudev Hmm, I don't think that's the problem. The workstation has clearly received an IP address, and the name of a kernel to download. This is NOT a dhcp problem. More likely a tftp problem. John needs to check his tftp server, to make sure of the following: 1) Is it installed ? On some distros, the tftp-server package doesn't get installed by default. 2) Is it enabled ? netstat -an | grep ":69 " That will tell us if it is running and listening. 3) Is there a /etc/hosts.allow rule allowing access to the tftp server ? 4) Is there an iptables rule stopping the tftp request from getting through to the tftp server ? Could be other things too, but I'll bet if he goes through the list above, he'll find the cause of the problem. From experience these people don't really care that there is plenty of info available on the Net, they want to be able to pick up the phone and call someone to come and solve their problem. I have run into this question of support every time I have given a proposal for using Linux (LTSP or not) to an organization. The question is generally something like: "Well, we are comfortable with your support but what happens if our company is not around in a year or two? How do we get support for this system then?" My answer (which, to date, has always allayed their concerns) is: 1) What kind of support do you really get from (insert name of large, monopoly software giant here)? When is the last time they actually helped you? Generally you called a smaller, independent company that came and solved your problem. 2) Linux has just as many, if not more, independent firms that do the same thing. Here is a print out of a quick Google search on "Linux Consultant" to prove my point. 3) As a Linux consultant, if I have a problem I am able to speak DIRECTLY with the people who wrote the software, not some hapless tech support person. Ask your other consultants if they can talk to the people who wrote the software they sell. I usually insert the example of when the NFS team fixed an obscure bug that I found during an LTSP install while I was trying to use NFS for removable media - something NFS was *never* designed to do. The NFS developers didn't tell me to go away because I was doing something "wrong" with their software and they didn't tell me that a fix would be included in the next release. They verified the problem and fixed it. Took a day! Finally, may I suggest that the reporter call some Linux end users as opposed to us "techies." I can suggest a number of clients that have had systems running both (insert name of large, monopoly software giant here) and Linux systems and can comment on the available support for both.
