With an old PI I've got the same problem and with a newer Client (celeron
800Mhz) the x-server doesn't start.
With the "normal" Kernel 2.4.21 without lpp the error-message (after blinking
of the screen) "no screen founds" appears.
With 2.4.19 I haven't got any problems - so it doesn't matter to me :-)
