This depends on your display manager, it seems not to have xdmcp
enabled, correct? If you use gdm, look into /etc/gdm/gdm.conf (Debian
3 has it there, no idea about other distros). There is a section
  [xdmcp]
with a line "Enable=true" (at least, that's what it should look like
