You could try to establish a PVM-daemon in the /opt/ltsp/i386 directory that then runs on the clients to do number-crunching. You could also like to look into OpenMosix for load distribution. What you mentioned is of course different from this, but then you had to manage x installations again - LTSP just offers the advantage of only one installation (plus lts.conf).
