??? Then change the 'EXTRAVERSION = ' value in /usr/src/linux/Makefile to add whatever you want to the name of the kernel. So, for example, if you added 'EXTRAVERSION = -custom' in your /usr/src/linux-2.4.9 directory, you would end up building a kernel with a uname -r of 2.4.9-custom, and your modules will end up in the /lib/modules/2.4.9-custom directory after 'make modules_install'. You can then copy the modules from that directory and keep your existing/running kernel modules intact.
