If you want, you can take a look at using ENBD. I don't have time currently to implement it. But if you have the desire, there was someone else who was working on it that I had talked to on IRC quite a few months ago. They seemed to have a working system and were just fixing up the configuration to determine how to integrate it into lts.conf, etc.
FYI, the LTSP community funded adding remote ioctl support to ENBD for CDROM and floppy devices. You can access these devices on the server and the system calls will be redirected across the network to your workstation. You can use the nbdfloppy contrib'd package to get an idea of what it will take to setup this scenario.
