I've just done something very similar - replaced RedHat 8 on my LTSP 3
server with Fedora Core 1 and LTSP 4. Getting X working was the usual
nightmare of 'which of the 27 config files have I forgotten this time?'
but it's all working now.

I too noticed that I couldn't telnet from a ws to the server, but I
could use ssh. That was fine for me, so I didn't investigate further :-)

Two suggestions:

- Try ssh to the IP address rather than the node name

- On your server, do System Settings -> Server Settings -> Services,
and check that sshd, xinetd, and telnet are running. If not, click
on the start button and also tick the check box to make sure they
  auto-start in future.

Good luck - it does all work in the end!
