I have a server with dual Opteron processors, 3 GB memory and two sata hardrive, the first hardrive is 38GB and 10000rpm hosting the root(/), while the second hardrive is 250GB and 7200rpm hosting the home directories (/home) of 1300 users. This server serves 41 clients, they all identical machines with Duron 1600 processor and 128MB memory. There are dual 1GB network connections on the server motherboard, all the switches (3 switches) used in this network have 1GB ports. This system is installed in a secondary school in UK, 33 clients are used in one teaching room designed to accommodate 32 students, the other 8 clients are installed in the sixth formers study centre to be used outside lessons. The server is connected through one network port to the thin client system and connected through the second network card to the school network to get Internet connection. I am using SuSE 9.1 pro and ltsp-4, I did a full installation of SuSE 9.1 with almost all the packages supplied with the distro in addition to Star Office 7. As you can imagine when this system used for teaching Star Office will be used by 32 students and the same thing can happen with other packages like GIMP and of course surfing the net by sometimes 40 clients at the same time and some of them may play games over the internet. My problem is with the login which is slow, it may take 10 minutes for all 32 students to login together, of course some of them will login faster than the others. However, once every one login the system speed is acceptable, of course loading Star Office is a slow even in a stand alone computer. I am using KDE as a user interface. Any advice of how to speed up the system is appreciated.
