I've just been working on the opposite part of ACPI, like using the
shutdown button of KDM to power off the client (which needs some hacking
in KDM, otherwise ltspinfod helps a lot here).
About shutting down the client when power button is pressed:
This can with most motherboards be done by setting the appropriate option
in the BIOS (like switching over from 4-sec-delay to instant-off). There
is no software shutdown needed, as thin clients are intended to be just
powered off. There may be reasons for logging out of the machine before
powering off, but whenever you see the login screen it's "now save to turn
off your computer".
In cases where this setting is unavailable, one _could_ read the
/proc/acpi/event thing to be notified of button press events and in case
of event execute something like /sbin/halt -p -f
This could be done as bash script or the like, so should be easy.

Anselm
