I had the same problem. 
The client had 100mb card connected to a 10mb hub. The hub was connected to a 
100mb switch in the serverrom. The problem was solved when I changed the 10mb 
hub with a 100mb switch. 
The server have Suse 9.1 with Linux 2.6 kernel
