We will be using Crossover to have at least Word, Excel and PowerPoint running. The rest, however, can be done with Linux apps.
Another question I have is the maximum load I should put on a single system if I have a dual Xeon 3.2 GHz with 4 GB of RAM and 2-3 SCSI or Serial SATA harddrives, how much terminal sessions can that system host, considering real world loading of word processors, web browsers, etc.
We have a private language school with a computer lab for 24 students + 1 teacher. The server is a 2.4 GHz Xeon with 2 GB RAM and (currently) 2 SATA drives. There is a Suse 9.1, LTSP 3 and Crossover running temporarily.
I am watching the load through ksysguardd. The biggest load is when people log in. During sessions (even when starting new apps) CPU load is typically between 10 and 15 % when about 15 to 20 peoples are working with it. Crossover wants more, you can see system load topping user load on the CPUs by about 2/3rds, i. e. load will be at about 30 - 40 % when a class is working with Word or Excel or so.
When more than 2 students log in at the same time, I've seen CPU load going up to nearly 100 % on one or two of the CPUs. Average load then shows values between 1.8 and 2.4.
But even during its hardest times the system never used more than 8 kByte of swap space... So 2 GB seems to be ok for us :-)
If you have a good network linking the clients to the server, I would estimate you could easily run 50 clients on it.
