I have investigated the problem:

all the affected clients have S3 Trio cards, like Istvan suggests. No KDE
app will run on these clients, though they run fine on my other clients.

swap doesn't fix it
colour depth is 16 bit
RAM is 32 or 64
LTSP is 4.1

Does anyone have any suggestions that don't involve changing the card? I
have a lot of these clients.
