Could it be a runlevel issue? Was it set up to run in the same runlevel in both the inittab and rc versions? Maybe in one case it was running before the sound modules had been loaded.


I can't very well launch a shell to inspect the environment from init,
since that, well, launches a shell, destroying the state that I wanted
to inspect. And also it could only inspect the env vars, while there may
be other issues.


Assuming you have /proc mounted, you could check the environment from /proc/<pid>/environ under both systems. In fact there's other stuff in /proc/<pid> that would be useful to compare between inittab and rc.
