That is the idea, don't encrypt if you don't need to.

It is not going to help from a security point of view because the encryption will be between the application server and the login server ( the host that the secure shell started on). The X traffic between the login (display manager server) and the X Terminal will be unencrypted.

So on a local LAN you are loading the app server to encrypt and the login server to decrypt, both machines could probably do without the CPU overhead for very little gain.
