I almost yleped in front of all my Unix scripting students ...this is 
indeed excellent news to me and should definately make LTSP integration 
more flexible.

I'm a Gentooer and would be more than pleased to test this approach on my 
systems...nothing simpler than unpacking a stage 3 into an 
/opt/ltsp/<arch>_test/ and go at it (without loosing an operationnal 
server)
