Stefan and others,

I have seen similar threads here re: random workstation lockups.
We use Neoware Capio thin clients with LTSP 4.1 and we experience
lockups also. Since we are new to LTSP and the Capios we first thought
the problem may be hardware level mouse issues with the Capios.

But we have noticed that 90% of the time its when the xscreensaver is
active.

Our Xserver is Redhat 8.0 kernel 2.4.26. I have tried disabling the
screen saver on a per user basis. This still starts an xscreensaver
process for a user but it is supposedly disabled. I have tried ssh'ing
to the xserver (from another workstation) as the user logged in with a
hung workstation and running varios xscreensaver commands
(activate, deactivate, exit) to see if any will free the mouse. None seem
to work.

So today I have disabled /usr/bin/X11/xscreensaver on the Xserver so
that it will never load for any workstation. I will let you know what
the results of that are.

We have learned that if the workstation has another Xserver signon
available ( SCREEN_02 = "startx -ac -query xxx.xxx.xx.xx :1") that
simply switching to that signon and back will free up the mouse for the
first X login. The second X can be a duplicate login of the original,
its the switching away and back which does the trick. This suggests to
me that its likely NOT a hardware level mouse/Capio problem.

I hope this provides some clues to this elusive problem. I'll gladly provide more details of our configuration if anybody wants.

We love LTSP. Good work Jim.
