I wouldn't be so quick to make that jugdement. Besides the bandwidth
savings, which admittedly on a LAN may not be necessary, NX will save
the running session if it's disconnected. This can be a LIFE SAVER.

I've implemented FreeNX and Thinstation for a large trucking company in
Ontario. They're in an area that has frequent power outages during
storms. They have UPSes for a number of fat clients, but now that
they're running thin clients, the UPSes are redundant. If the power
does go out, the server keeps running (on a UPS). Everyones' thin
clients turn off, but their session is automatically saved. When the
power returns, employees turn on their thin clients, login, and viola,
they're reconnected to their sessions as if nothing had happened. Of
course, you can control and instead not automatically reconnect to a
saved session, but in most cases, auto reconnect is preferred.

XDMCP is great. But, I think LTSP or Thinstation or whatever, together
with FreeNX/NX, is an awesome combination. And really, why knock the
bandwidth savings? They could help stave off expensive network
upgrades.

Ranbir
