hello again,
the fixed nvidia-binary archive, which herr ehrenberg kindly provided, at
first interferes with the old archive like:
api mismatch:nv kernel mod has version 1.0-8178, but x mod has 1.0-8756.
so i removed the files, and extracted to the clean /opt/ltsp/i386 dir. (with
exception of my lts conf)
it booted nicely, greeting me with a nvidia-logo and suorisingly fast, and
responsible kdm. after logging in kde popped 2 warnings, telling me about a
crashed "composite manager" , which seemingly needs a "composite" xorg
extension. btw this is xorg 6.8, i guess the one i have on my server. it also
wants me to add an option to my x config to enable this composite extension.
it claims to be what makes my beloved kde-eyecandy, like translucency. well,
nevertheless - glxinfo now gives me the output i am used to, and glxgears ran
right away. behold:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ glxgears
10504 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2100.800 FPS
12333 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2466.600 FPS
8169 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1633.800 FPS
8166 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1633.200 FPS
7964 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1592.800 FPS
=) soo nice. well, it somewhat slows down after a few seconds as you can see,
and the sys gets a little irresponsive (?) and stays like that until i kill
the glxgears (which by the way are such a nice and simple tool, also give
sdl-gears and atis fglrx-gears a try, but the original stays on top) .
this looks to me a system/config flaw, rather then a gpudriver problem, or x
problem. hr, well, as i just see on my server-mon, the server (all-in-one) is
pretty stuffed. sadly i just have one gb of ram and one swap. starting
glzgears on the client eats away those last mbs. mayve i can get around that
my scheduling a little more resources to the ltsp part of the server.
but - for today i am satisfied, that was way faster than i thought thisll get
fixed. a big thanks to herr ehrenberg and his nv-driver-archive. dont know
what mourne about the support on linux groups. whenever i have asked
nicely, sooner or later somebody got the solution or the missing part to it.
this is a quite fine example for that id say.
if i wont run into further problems with the drivers themself ill skip trying
to put them in my LBE, id rather look for the next problem i manage to
produce =). i believe that the memory problem is specific to my system, and
that other people most possibly wont rum into this, it doesnt eat to much, i
just dont have enought - and am running very heavy kdesktops on client and
server. cant wait to get that good old quake a try. i imagine ltsp to become
a great way of gaming. a large server, and small diskless clients with large
gpus. such a client is avaible off-the-shelf, and for as low as, hm, bout 180
euro. for gamingcenters, or those conventions.
thanks again! ill go tweak that client now and enjoy some gl... and maybe a
good dish of ... pizza.
mfg
