Perhaps you could reprogram the system BIOS. If it's Award or AMI, then
you could put Etherboot in as a module (see the Etherboot wiki for
details).

Buying RTL8139 NICs and putting proper ROM chips might be the cheapest
option without touching the BIOS.

I think DOC cannot be reprogrammed with a ROM burner - same socket does
not necessarily meen same electrical or logical interface. I just did
away with the DOCs I encountered, and programmed Etherboot into the BIOS
instead. What with a bunch of same hardware machines is not too much
hassle: You can reuse the boot floppy ;-)
