I have the exact same problem, the link appears on the desktop with the 
folder in Drives, but opening the folder does not cause the device to be 
mounted. This happens for both usb sticks and CD-ROM discs. Inserting and 
removing a CD causes the link to appear and disappear, but it does not get 
mounted on the client. Switching to the shell screen confirms this.

Previously I was running 4.2u1 but have now updated to u3 but still the 
problem persists. My distro is SuSE 10.0.
