These drives came formatted with a FAT partition, but I also reformatted to
make sure and I still get the same error.  Other ideas?

For these drives to work, then need to be partitioned and formatted  
as vfat (basic old windows partition and file system type). Some usb  
drives are sold unformatted, this may be the case with these drives.
