Your server doesn't need a sound card in the way that it doesn't really 
need a graphics card to provide X11 graphics.   In both cases, the 
terminal server is running applications as sound or X clients 
(respectively), and your terminals are running sound and X servers 
(respectively).

You can also think of it how an Internet streaming audio (e.g. 
Shoutcast/ Real Audio) server does not need a sound card, but it plays 
sound through computers.
