Eric,

Any chance you have the hardware acceleration line uncommented in ltsp.conf?

X_DEVICE_OPTION_01      = "NoAccel"

Using hardware acceleration will usually improve performance considerably. I've 
had to turn it off in the past to get rid of mouse droppings but always use it 
otherwise.
