I have edubuntu workstations ... we use smbldap and I have to add this to
get sound to work:
sudo gedit /etc/udev/permissions.rules
Find the sound device section
Add MODE="0666", in front of GROUP="audio"
I'm sure you've already tried that, but just in case ...
