The best way (theoretically) to disable anything on a thin client without
changing its behaviour on the server is through the Lockdown Editor in the
System|Administration menu. In the "Panel" section check the box for
Notification Area. Mine has 2, not sure which one you need. Of course you'll
lose all notifications in the notification area, such as program crash
notices.
