After I sent that email, I remembered I had the same problem when I set 
up the J-125s last year (we set them up every year for about 4 weeks 
just for new student orientations).  I had hit up the irc channel for 
help and someone from there (Jim, maybe?) sent me a different kernel 
image, which worked.  The issue has something to do with the tagged 
kernels, which etherboot uses.  Hopefully, Jim or someone can clarify 
the problem or correct me.

I did recover the image they had sent me and it definitely boots.  The 
version of that kernel is 2.6.20, whereas the one in Ubuntu 8.04 is 
2.6.24.  I'm not sure yet if this will cause me problems, as I'm 
struggling with other issues right now.
