I sent my first email to the list on the 8th of January, with the title
"VMWare remote console as front-end". I didn't get any answers, so now
I'm wondering if nobody saw it due to some email filter, or if there
really was nothing useful to say about the issue...

I'm reproducing the content below in case anybody feels like helping out
a newbie, but even if not, at least I'd like to be sure it's getting to
the list...

Thanks.

Hi all,

this is my first post here. I'm just starting with LTSP and it is amazing!

I have a VMWare Server 2.0 that runs these machines:

M1- Ubuntu 8.1 with LTSP server
M2- Windows Vista
M3- Windows XP
... and others.

Then I have a bunch of old PC's that I want to use to access these
virtualized systems.

Accessing Ubuntu from the LTSP clients is a piece of cake and works
brilliantly.

Accessing Windows is not so easy.... I'm am trying to get rdekstop to
work as a front-end, it seems this is possible. I'm still working on it,
but that is not exactly what I wanted to ask about in this post.

My question is if anyone has tried (or knows if it is possible) to get
vmware-vmrc (the browser-installed VMWare remote console) or VMWare
Player (which can also operate as a remote console) to work as a
frontend in LTSP? That is, loading vmware-vmrc in lts.conf instead of
the Ubuntu login screen or rdesktop. This would mean that the screen
images would be going through MKS (the vwmare protocol), instead of X
Windows or RDP.

We'd have to try it to see how well it works, but I expect that it could
have some advantages
over rdesktop, namely the possibility to start and stop the VM from the
console, and later on, if somebody knows VIX (the vmware API) better
chances of improving integration with local hardware.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
