Scott,

I think that issue was fixed in ubuntu 9.04, 8.04 and 8.10 had issues with
it if I remember.

I noticed this same behavior with a USB stick.  Plugged in, it saw it 
and mounted it right away. Nothing I treid would get it to unmount.

And it didn't unmount it automatically after 2 seconds.
