This might sound strange for some of you guys, but we're still working with LTSP 4.2 and a Suse 10.3 server.
So I tried LTSP 5 on our system for the first time, using SuseEducation 11.2 and KIWI-LTSP 5. I prepared an older machine with a new system and set it up like described in the documentation. There were some glitches, and I'd like to discuss how to proceed. My first impression was that the clients take way much longer time to boot into the login screen. Loading initrd produces some long lines of dots and takes at least 5 sec (against half a second on our current system). Booting takes much longer, producing a lot of messages in the startup script like on any ordinary Linux system. All in all it lasted at least 90 sec or longer to boot a client. First question: Is that normal with LTSP 5 or can it be optimized? There are DellOptiplex PIII clients which seemed to run flawlessly. The Siemens Scenic P6 ones, however, fail when switching into graphics mode. The screen goes black, and that's it. They have Matrox video cards (maybe 4, maybe 8 MB, I'm not sure right now) which aren't that bad, but it might need tweaking Xorg configuration. So my second question: where do I have to go here? Thank you for any hints!
