Thank you Gavid, even though I'd heard about the pixmap issue, I wasn't aware of any attempts at solving it (even if they're currently frozen). So, setting MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE=1 in /etc/profile is a quick way to prevent low RAM thin clients from crashing - I didn't know a workaround existed either.
