Don't forget about the possibility of running fat clients. They use
more energy and need a fan, but you can build a nice little dual-core
machine for a very reasonable price. Here's a very small microATX case
for $60. Add a motherboard, a CPU, and RAM, and you have a really
small fat client. Which means your server can serve more clients.

Of course, if your goal is reduced energy and noise, that may leave
these out of consideration.
