just to answer my own question

turned out I had of course forgotten about
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebugLocalDev and it turned out I had not installed
ltspfs

Now they seems to be working just fine.

Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] Debugging USB

Hi

We just got our hands on some HP T5530 and a few T5520 terminals, that we
wanted to try out. They seem to boot just fine.

Client software is a Ubuntu 12.04 with non pae kernel.
App server is Ubuntu 14.04, Mate desktop

Both 32bit.

I'm having some problems getting USB sticks to work and need some hints as how
to debug USB access.

As far as I can see the stick lights up when plugged in, however there is no
reaction when the stick is added.

Shouldn't I be able to see the client reacting to the USB stick from a local
shell on the client.
