Hi,
I have just pushed a very simple implementation of mplib "preamble":
https://github.com/dohyunkim/luamplib
Usage is quite simple. For instance: \mplibpreamble{ u:=72; }.
Then this code will be used as a preamble to each and every mplib figs
afterwards.
It is not the same as what Troy suggested, but take a look at it to
find whether it is useful.
