Yes, it is the kind of cowboy practice that will lead to puzzled and
irritated users; a better way would be a little C extension that calls
LoadLibrary or dlopen, depending on the user's current religion.

That would be a good thing; it would allow the package maintainer to
specify things in a more flexible way.
