Interesting. Thanks for tracking down the problem. We could add a luarocks.fs.macosx module to restrict that behavior to Mac OSX, but I'm not sure if that's the best option. It doesn't make sense for portability to allow files staring with "._" in other platforms and disallow them on OSX.
