Yes, that was the case.

Rockspec files have a "dependencies" table in which they can specify a
Lua version as a dependency. Unfortunately not all rockspecs were
checked for Lua 5.2 compatibility and many optimistically assume "lua
>= 5.1". I just uploaded an updated revision for the luafilesystem
rockspec which should provide a better error message.
