The .rockspec files do have the md5sum for the other versions, but you
probably used the .src.rock file, which bundles the old lpdf.tar.gz in
them (so that the rock doesn't break when lhf makes a new release).

Strange. The command-line tool does not keep a cache of the remote
manifest between invocations. LR 2.1.0 shows different search results
depending on the Lua version you're running (5.1 or 5.2).

Are you fetching straight from the luarocks.org repository or using a
mirror? I just realized some mirrors may not be fetching manifest-5.1
and manifest-5.2 (as used by LR 2.1.0) if they're mirroring with wget
instead of rsync. I'm adding links to those in the index.html file
just to make sure.
