Thanks it would be nice if you could document it, even (or especially)
if it is likely to change.

We may need it in latex (existing packages using \pdfshellescape) and
I feel uneasy
relying on undocumented code.

It does seem a bit strange being overloaded on to os.execute() since
it is presumably a fixed
integer for the duration of any document, so the function syntax seems
slightly odd, but
it's certainly workable (if documented:-) so that's more of a minor
aside since you mentioned
it might change.

I'll add

\directlua{tex.write(status.shell_escape)}

While testing your stuff you can do:

\directlua{tex.write(status.shell_escape or 2)}

(as it will be available in 0.81)
