The crash no longer happens with a luatex 1.09.

But now I wonder, is there/should there be a difference between

\hyphenation{mul-ti{-}{}{-}word{-}{}{-}boun-daries}

and

\hyphenation{mul-ti=word=boun-daries}

? In my tests they give the same output.
if you input

multi-word-boundaries

that becomes

multi<disc>word<disc>boundaries

and when matching the = is just a skip operation so we jump over the <disc> and it stays

as {-}{}{-} injects a similar disc indeed you get the same
