Don't try to grab math material at all but insert ActualText within the
mlist_to_hlist callback (not sure whether that works adequately) or
inspect the shipout box and insert pdf_literal whatsits around mlist
nodes. You asked a similar question about that before as well, but for
local_par instead of mlist:

Then you should accept some of those answers to remove your questions
